What to Wear to a “Black Tie Optional” Wedding.

We attended a black tie optional wedding this past weekend at @hotelretlaw in Fond du Lac.

I wasn’t sure what to wear as I’ve never been invited to a formal wedding before.

And the floor length sequined dress I wore to prom 27 years ago (and is still hanging in my closet downstairs) obviously doesn’t fit.

However, after a bit of research, I learned that cocktail dresses are appropriate for black tie optional events.

Especially midi-length styles vs. knee-length.

Satin and sequins are both welcome. As is lace.

And bridesmaids dresses or ball gowns also work.

So, I had my husband take my measurements and ordered this dress
online based on the size chart.

It was a full size too big, but I took it to a tailor a few weeks ago to have it taken in.

I like that this is a neutral enough style that I’ll be able to wear it again if ever invited to a fancy holiday party or other special event.

It was really fun to get all dolled up and also see everyone else dressed to the nines for this event.

This dress comes in at least 12 different colors.

And some are marked down significantly.

My cousin Elliott came to visit last Thursday all

My cousin Elliott came to visit last Thursday all the way from Virginia. So my mom came for the day to see him as well.

After lunch at The Great Dane, we decided to go take a tour of Epic’s Intergalactic Headquarters in Verona.

I have only ever been outside.

And my mom had heard great things about the tour.

So we thought it would be a fun activity for the three of us to do together.

And boy were we glad we did!

When we checked in at the Visitor’s desk, the receptionist asked which campuses we would like to tour.

There are several, and she suggested we would only have time (and perhaps energy) for two.

We chose Storybook and Wizard’s Academy.

And after an hour exploring Storybook, ran out of steam. 😆

There are so many incredibly thoughtful details around each corner. It’s a magical place to visit.

You can skip down the Yellow Brick Road.

Or even travel down the Rabbit Hole.

We all really enjoyed it!

Epic offers self guided tours Sat-Sun from 10am - 3pm, and Mon-Fri from 2:30pm - 5pm.

I plan to go back to see the Harry Potter campus next.

And highly recommend paying Epic a visit!

Here is what I kept from my most recent box from @stitchfix. 📦

I like to order a Fix for my birthday each year. To treat myself to something new.

Particularly because my birthday always falls right after a new school year. And at the change of seasons between summer and fall.

This green tie front button down top is a great update to a closet staple. It works as a basic and will pair nicely with jeans, pants, or denim skirts (they’re back!)

The wine colored girlfriend jeans are a beautiful color for fall and work appropriate. They aren’t quite as slim as a skinny or slouchy like a true boyfriend, but instead somewhere in the middle.

When I tried them on together, the fall colors compliment each other nicely. So I decided to keep them both!

I just added my own booties and was good to go.

They also sent a red and black Buffalo plaid tie-waisted t-shirt dress that didn’t quite fit.

And an amazing Steve Madden shacket that I actually really liked but was somewhat snug across the shoulders.

Lastly, a fun khaki, black, and army green balloon sleeve sweater that just wasn’t flattering enough on me to keep.

My 45th birthday weekend was one for the books! 🎉

We kicked it off Thursday night with a bourbon tasting at @jhenrybourbon with @madisonmoms and Wisconsin Corn.

I took the day off on Friday and got a massage and went to see the Barbie movie before meeting my husband and son at @turnkeymadison for dinner.

We strolled through GLEAM at @olbrichgardens after dinner. Which was the perfect way to end the night.

Then Saturday, we went to the @uwbadgers football game. And hosted a backyard bash at our house that night.

And if that’s not enough, my girl picked me up at 9:30 am Sunday morning to head to Paoli to stroll the farmer’s market and do a little shopping before hitting the Pub for a birthday lunch in honor of our friend @elaynehope.

I was pooped by Sunday afternoon. 😆

But my heart was full after spending quality time with family and friends.

Huge shout out to everyone who helped me celebrate or sent well wishes.🙌🏽

Did you know September is Library Card Sign-up Month?

The @americanlibraryassociation, created this annual celebration to demonstrate the many ways a library card can unlock access to resources for anyone, beyond just library books!

People of all ages can sign up for a library card to take advantage of the various programs and services our public libraries have to offer.

From summer reading programs, and weekly story time for kids, to internet and computer access, adult programming on sustainable living, and more.

Libraries have always been a big part of my life. I distinctly remember the joy of going to the @racinepubliclibrarywi to check out books as a kid.

I checked out this book Wait Till Helen Comes, by Mary Downing Hahn, multiple times as a child.

It’s a ghost story that totally sucked me in. Which is the kind of power a good book can have over you!

I was thrilled when my son showed a love of reading at an early age.

So, I took him to get his very first library card just last year. He had turned seven that summer and was just starting second grade. Which seemed like a good age to empower him with his very own library card.

I hung on to it for him until just this week, when I entrusted him to take care of it on his own.

That way, he has it for when his school or afterschool program takes a trip to the library. So he can check out books on visits without me if he wants.

Libraries are essential to healthy and vibrant communities because they are truly made to be accessible to everyone. Regardless of race, ethnicity, religious, or political beliefs, socioeconomic status, etc.

You can participate in the ALA’s social media campaign sharing what you love about the library throughout the month of September.

Just create a social post showcasing how you use the library and share on Instagram or Facebook with the hashtag #HowILibrary.

Tag your local library, the ALA account and your friends to help spread the word about Library Card Sign-up Month!

I know it probably feels like an abrupt change after a decade or so of skinny jeans, but trust me on this one. You need a pair in your life!

These wide leg frayed hem crops are going to be my new favorite jeans this fall. You can dress them up or down. Wear with sneakers, flats, sandals, or booties.

Wear it with a plain white or graphic tee, sleeveless sweater, or tank.

Add straight leg cargos, flare jeans, or joggers, or even a fun printed midi skirt.

Then top it off with combat boots and chunky gold or silver jewelry.

And you've got yourself a lewk.

Motos look great over more feminine silhouettes as well, like a sheath dress for work, or maxi dress for a special event.

Are we ready for fall fashion yet?! 🍁

Once September rolls around, I’m usually itching to transition my wardrobe to fall.

But Wisconsin weather is rarely ready to let go of the heat so we can bust out our sweaters and boots.

So having transitional items in your closet can help in the meantime when you are ready to move from one season to the next. But the weather might not be…

For example, opting for a lighter weight 3/4 length sleeve top in a fall floral print instead of a bright summery top.

And bootcut or flare jeans in lieu of denim cutoffs.

These clogs are also great for the change in seasons. Because they aren’t as warm and bulky as boots. But offer more coverage than a strappy summer sandal.

These are the sort of items I’ll be reaching for over the next few weeks as the leaves start to turn and the temperatures finally drop. Even though it was still 90 yesterday.

And I heard maxi skirts are back. (Did they ever really go away?) So I gave this old Ralph Lauren one I’ve had for at least 15 years a whirl recently.

I actually kind of love how we recycle old trends so something you’ve owned for awhile can become new again.

So much of what we do as moms feels like labor.

The mental load of carrying so many things around in our heads.

The mountains of laundry.

Planning and packing.

Shuttling kids around to school and after-school activities.

There is plenty of time for that as the month ticks on.

So kick up your feet today and relax.

Even if just for a few moments.

You deserve to enjoy this day off too.

Summer 2023 Recap Reel!

And just like that…summer 2023 has come to an end.

We camped. We biked. We swam.

We visited with family.

Made it to Door County and Wisconsin Dells.

La Crosse. Wausau. Milwaukee. And Sheboygan.

We gathered with friends.

Ate ice cream. And s’mores. Brats and hotdogs.

And yes. Drank a beer or two. Including on the Terrace.

Took a boat ride on Lake Mendota.

And packed in as much as we could. While still allowing ourselves time to just be.

To be home in our own city and neighborhood. And to experience the things that make this little town of ours so great.

Cheers to a wonderful summer!

Gearing up for the start of the new academic year

Gearing up for the start of the new academic year at work in addition to my son going back to school this week.

And just like a kid getting ready to head back to school, I like to treat myself to something new to start things off on the right foot as well!

This year, it was these crisp white classic @keds. Which pair well with dresses, skirts, shorts, and jeans.

And are stylish, yet comfortable, for walks on my lunch break or trekking across campus to a meeting.

Work attire has gotten much more casual since returning to the office post-pandemic.

And I’m here for it!
