Are you Team Real Tree or Team Fake when it comes to Christmas trees?

I grew up with artificial trees, so I am usually Team Fake.

But my husband grew up having real trees for Christmas, so he is definitely Team Real.

So we try to mix it up and do a real tree every other year or so. And put up an artificial tree on the off years.

This was a Real Tree year.

So yesterday we piled in the car and drove out to @eastwindchristmastreefarm in Marshall to pick out a tree.

They have precut Christmas trees of all different shapes and sizes.

And colored trees as well! Including purple, red, and white.

Since none of us had ever experienced a colored tree before, we opted for a purple one for something unique and unexpected this holiday season!

P. S. This was only the second time in my adult life that I’ve gone to a Christmas tree farm! There is definitely something magical about it that puts you in the holiday spirit. :)

You don’t have to “earn” your calories in order to enjoy them.

You are allowed to eat what you want without guilt.

Your weight and size is nobody’s business.

And if someone comments on either, that’s their issue, not yours.

Yes food is fuel, but it is also meant to be enjoyed.

As is time with family and friends.

So don’t feel forced to eat something you don’t want.

Nor to spend time with people who make you feel bad about yourself.

Take some time this week to consider what and who you are truly grateful for and how you want to spend your time for the holiday.

I hope it’s with people who make you feel loved and know you are more than your size.

I went to a workshop this morning on navigating differing perspectives and the concept of polarity.

According to the New Oxford American Dictionary, “polarity” is defined as “the state of having two opposite or contradictory tendencies, opinions, or aspects.”

If we aren’t currently living in a state of polarity, then I don’t know what is...

I think many of us are struggling to navigate diametrically opposing viewpoints when it comes to politics right now.

Most of us have probably viewed this last election as very clearly “either/or” and certainly have drawn lines of “right and wrong”.

Today’s presenter encouraged attendees to consider “both/and” thinking instead.

Both/and thinking was coined by Wendy K. Smith and Marianne Lewis in their book “Both/And Thinking: Embracing Creative Tensions to Solve Your Toughest Problems.”

And navigating the current political climate certainly fits the bill of tough problems.

As we move into the holiday season and spend time with family or friends who may have strong opposing viewpoints, I would encourage you to approach these challenging situations with curiosity, humility, and an understanding that both ways of viewing the world can be true.

It doesn’t mean you have to agree, but you can seek to understand from a place of curiosity and not judgement. Especially if these are people you care about and relationships you want and need to maintain, whatever your reasons.

It was a helpful reminder, at least for me, because our lives and perspectives are not black and white. And we can learn from diverse viewpoints that are different from our own, even if we struggle to find the common ground.

It also doesn’t mean I excuse the behavior we have seen or things that have been said.

Nor does it change the fact that I remain deeply concerned about what lies ahead.

I do want to get through the holidays without harboring negative feelings towards people we love though. Regardless of how they voted. As hard as that may seem right now.

So, I’ll be practicing both/and thinking to the best of my ability.

Yesterday I saw a creator on Threads share that she was SO PROUD of herself for not “stepping out of her niche” to share anything political.

First of all, yesterday was not the day.

And second of all, having a platform is a privilege. One you COULD use to give voice to others who don’t have one if you so choose.

One of the reasons I started blogging in the first place was because I didn’t see Black women represented in the local mom blog scene.

Though as you know, many of us are mothers.

And I strongly believe representation matters.

We do not all have the same experiences.

But can learn from each other if we remain open to hearing different perspectives.

Especially from people who do not look like us.

Today, I ask you to think about whose voice and opinions you value most.

What do those people look like?

How do their backgrounds differ from yours?

Who are you following on social media?

And how many accounts show up in your feed that offer a different lens than the one you see life through?

If the first people that come to mind are those most similar to you, perhaps this is an opportunity for growth.

America was never great for many Americans.

Neither was the first round of what we collectively are all about to go through again.

But it’s too late to go back and fix what’s just been done. So we will instead need to think about charting a path forward.

“One can choose to go back toward safety or forward toward growth. Growth must be chosen again and again“ - Abraham Maslow

How will you choose to grow from this experience?

I am already asking myself, what can I do despite feeling powerless?

Focus on what’s within my control.
Take steps to protect my peace.
Talk to people I feel safe with about how we are all feeling.
Continue to treat people with kindness.

We do still have power over how we show up. Both for ourselves and for others.

So that’s a good place to start.

TRIGGER WARNING.

This goes out to single issue voters.

You know someone who has had an abortion.

In fact, you know, love, and respect someone who has had an abortion.

Abortion is much more nuanced than a woman choosing not to carry a pregnancy to term for whatever her reasons.

Missed abortion is the medical term for miscarriage.

A dilation and curettage (D&C) is the procedure commonly performed when a woman miscarries and her body doesn’t fully process and release the miscarriage.

A D&C is technically an abortion.

If a woman experiences an ectopic pregnancy, she is often given an injection of methotrexate, which is used to end - or abort - the pregnancy.

In both instances, of miscarriage or ectopic pregnancy, abortion can be a life saving procedure to ensure the mother doesn’t DIE from a pregnancy that is no longer viable.

When my body naturally miscarried at 6 weeks and we did not learn until I was supposed to be 8 weeks, I was advised to let my body handle the “missed abortion” and release the miscarriage on it’s own.

After another 6 weeks of waiting, which was excruciatingly painful emotionally, my body did not complete the job and I had to have a D&C.

Without that procedure, I was at great risk of sepsis. Which of course, could have killed me.

This was a pregnancy I so desperately wanted. That ended in abortion.

Overturning Roe vs. Wade called these life saving procedures into question. And in some states, they are simply no longer an option - devaluing the life of the mother in favor of the unborn child, whether the pregnancy is viable or not.

Women are literally dying as a result.

And that’s definitely something I take issue with.

The fact of the matter is - if they take one right away, there is nothing at all to stop them from taking more away.

There was already talk about reversing laws around marriage equality, including the one that sees my interracial marriage as valid and legal.

I’m outraged that this is where we are in 2024.

And, quite frankly, you should be too.

So vote today like your life depends on it.

Or the life of your mother, sister, daughter, wife, auntie, cousin, or friend.

Because theirs actually might.

Happy November friends!

This is a month of gratitude and I challenge you to write down at least one thing you are grateful for each day this month.

While a bit unsettling, I’m grateful we had such beautiful weather throughout the month of October. Which allowed my husband extra time to paint the exterior of our house. And for us to get out and enjoy a lovely beach vacation to Indiana Dunes with our friends. And for me to take one last bike ride to work without freezing my tush off. 🚲

I love fall and the crunch of the leaves and crisp cool air. So I welcome the transition to cooler weather that started with Halloween yesterday.

While chilly, I’m also grateful it didn’t snow!

The evolution of a selfie stick photo shoot…

Here’s a little peek at what that looks like.

I often take my own pictures. Using my iPhone on self-timer. Or with the voice control command I set up to take three pictures when I say “say cheese!”

I don’t live asking other people to take my picture, so I’ve just learned to do it myself.

For instance, when I visited @warmbellyfarmcg last weekend, I dipped off on my own to explore the many photo ops throughout the farm to snap a few shots with their well placed selfie sticks vs. dragging someone along to shoot photos of me.

Content creation doesn’t have to be overly complicated.

Nor does it always have to be at the mercy of other people.

If you are interested in creating content, you can learn to be your own photographer!

Even the shot of me recently featured in @madisonmagazine was a self portrait.

I would wave my magic wand and rid the world of hate, racism, sexism, homophobia, misogyny, prejudice, discrimination, and fear of people who are different from you.

There would be no war.

There would be no poverty.

And there would be no political divide.

We would instead finally find a way to peacefully coexist as humans and make the most of our limited and precious time on this Earth.

Not wasting our days with hate in our hearts.

But filled with love and light instead. ✨

If I could be Queen for just one day…I would use my power to make the world a better place.

But alas, since I am not a Queen, nor do I possess a magic wand, I’ll just have to use my vote and pray to God that makes a difference instead.

We spent the afternoon at @warmbellyfarmcg yesterday for the last weekend of their Full Harvest Festival.

This newer fall fun farm has all of the activities our family enjoys. Including a pumpkin bounce pad for kids, a corn maze, tractor train rides, a pumpkin patch, and more.

They have 20+ photo ops throughout the farm, along with a bar that serves both alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages.

Today’s the last day of the festival. And they are open until 4:00 pm if you are looking for something to do on this beautiful fall day!
