Black Movie Marathon: What to Watch this Fall

As we gear up for fall and the start to the school year, I fear that the fall TV lineup is not going to be what we are used to. With production on hold indefinitely due to the pandemic, and a postponed college football season, what the heck are we going to watch in our free time?

I, for one, am planning to re-watch some of my favorite Black films. One because I love them. And two, because it’s been awhile since I’ve seen any of these.

So, I want to celebrate my Blackness and the beauty of my people with a straight up Black Movie Marathon! I invite you to do the same. Particularly if you have never even seen some of these movies.

This is by no means a comprehensive list of all of the movies you should watch featuring Black protagonists and story lines, or depicting the Black experience. I would absolutely encourage you to watch some of the more historical and educational films that are based on truth too, like Amistad and Hotel Rwanda.

That’s not what this is though.

This is a list of MY personal favorites, many of which are romantic comedies or family dramas from the 90’s or early 2000’s, that I have watched over and over again and will continue to do so.

Enjoy! And let me know which ones are your favorites too!

Love Jones (1997)

Soul Food (1997)

Brown Sugar (2002)

Love & Basketball (2000)

The Wood (1999)

The Brothers (2001)

The Best Man (1999)

Diary of a Mad Black Woman (2005)

Jackie Brown (1997)

Waiting to Exhale (1995)

Friday (1995)

Boyz N The Hood (1991)

Juice (1992)

Menace II Society (1993)

Poetic Justice (1993)

How Stella Got Her Groove Back (1998)

Dead Presidents (1995)

Set it Off (1996)

What did I miss? Any others you would add to the list?

Happy movie watching!

    1. Thank you!! I already thought of a few that I missed…like Belly, New Jack City and Coming to America. But, seriously…throwbacks are the best! They take us back to a different time and place…
